Description: Presently the seal industry's most widely used and economical elastomer, Nitrile combines excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels, silicone greases, hydraulic fluids, water and alcohols, with a good balance of such desirable working properties as low compression set,high abrasion resistance,and high tensile strength.
Key Use(s): Low temperature military uses. Off-road equipment. Automotive, marine, aircraft fuel systems. Can be compounded for FDA applications.Oil resistant applications of all types.
Standard Compound: -40° to +257°F
Hardness (Shore A): 40 to 90.
Features: Comprised of the copolymer butadiene and acrylonitrile, in varying proportions. Compounds can be formulated for service temperature ranging from -85°F to +275°F. Use of Carboxylated Nitrile can have superior abrasion resistance, while still having improved oil resistance.
Limitations: Nitrile compounds are attached by small amounts of Ozone. Phthalate type plasticizers are commonly used in compounding Nitrile Rubber. These plasticizers can migrate out and cause problems with certain plastics. Also, new regulations on certain phthalates have limited their use.
Nitrile (Buna-N) is the most widely used elastomer due to its excellent resistance to petroleum products, operating temperature range (-40°F to +257°F) and one of the best performance-to-cost values. It's an ideal material for aerospace, automotive, propane and natural gas applications. Special Hydrogenated Nitrile (HNBR) compounds can improve resistance to direct ozone, sunlight, and weather exposure while increasing temperature range to +300°F.
Nitrile rubber is the general term for acrylonitrile butadiene terpolymer. The acrylonitrile content of nitrile sealing compounds varies considerably (18% to 50%) and influences the physical properties of the finished material.
The higher the acrylonitrile content, the better the resistance to oil and fuel. At the same time, elasticity and resistance to compression set is adversely affected. In view of these opposing realities, a compromise is often drawn, and a medium acrylonitrile content selected. Nitrile has good mechanical properties when compared with other elastomers and high wear resistance.
Both o-rings and gaskets can be made from Nitrile materials.
